First of all, why am I doing this review? short answer because most reviews are outdated. the game has changed a lot since its bad release, so I’m going to do a review about it ignoring the rocky start.
So, whats changed? Simply put, they fixed whats wrong, there have been character balances, and much needed new content. The game mostly suffered from the peer to peer servers which caused lag as well as disconnecting everyone if the host rage quit but the game now. Another thing that plagued was low content, there were few maps a decent amount of champions and only a few game modes. Again all improved, they make new maps and characters frequently, the only area where I’m disappointed is game modes, there’s only been one and while its great I wish there was more. ill get into that more later.
The fighters are the most fun thing about the game. Every character is unique, and while my feelings aren’t universal, even the most aggravating characters feel like I need more practice with and I could fight them just fine, it feels like its my fault for dying rather than it being cheap. That’s not to say all the characters are perfectly balanced (as all things should be) there are several characters that have attacks the feel unfair like shamans bite which, in my opinion, does too much damage based of the fact on how easy it is to land and the fact that it also heals. But I digress the characters are chalk full of fun abilities and with the balance updates every character is at least somewhat capable without removing what makes them fun and unique. Every character is split into one of four groups Vanguards the all rounders, Assassins with low health high damage and poor deference, heavy’s with high health slow attacks and high damage, and hybrids having characteristic of 2 of the classes. some unique things are assassins take longer to block, so they cant shred everyone with there quick high damage attacks. but without the ability to block or parry they would be really bad, so to make up for it they added in deflects to all assassins. a deflect is basically a better harder to pull off and less consistent parry, allowing them to still do what they lack but having it be loads harder. All heavy’s have some form of ability to stop there opponent like throwing them on there ground, breaking there back, or flipping them at the right moment. vanguards have to rely on there combos and skills to take down there enemies.
Now we will be talking about pros and cons. I’ve always liked melee combat in any video game, however it’s never felt like you’re actually wielding a weapon as it usually was just left click to damage or in more in depth game you can block (oooo, how cool). however, in for honor, the focus of combat is in melee weapons and not guns which allows them to fully flesh out its combat. for honors combat system has and always will be its coolest feat. Like I said the maps were pretty lackluster in amount however, all of the maps were still good, and all they’ve done is add more quality stuff. all the maps are cool that feel lived in and like they have history they look and feel cool to play in. The characters are a positive point but I mentioned it all prior. The negatives are there despite the positives. my biggest issue is the lack of game modes there are 6 game modes in the game but it felt like 2 until they added breach. there is duel, a one on one fight, brawl a two on two fight (that has unspoken honor codes that makes it feel like longer duel) dominion, the most popular one which is a 4 on 4 objective mode, then there 2 game modes that are dead and it takes you like, 10 ish minutes to get into a match. breach is an interesting alive that was added, its a long form 4v4 payload that has very interesting objectives. this being said its very annoying that there are only 3 different ways to play. I mentioned balance earlier and yeah, its annoying there are very cheap feeling characters that you hate to play against and it can ruin the fun sometimes, and with how varied the system is there’s going to be at least one thing that gets under your skin.
A word that’s been used a lot here is “unique” and that’s because its the best way to describe it. even people who hate it agree with the statement that its very different from anything before.
Most criticisms with the game at the time of release was squandered potential and those were good criticisms, but with all of the love and attention given by the devs and community I don’t think that applies anymore. I would have made a rating of 3-4/10 3 years ago but now I would give it a 7-8/10 its a fun game that will challenge your skills and test your patience. Its still a living game that gets attention and it living for this long with such a bad start can only mean there’s something at it’s core which is that potential that’s been tapped into over those 3 years.
